B83. NO PHOTO Have a few of these scarce de Lapham-Hickey Steel Corp. advertising blades left, this company is a 'steel service center', which means they buy steel from large steel mills and keep it on hand for smaller companies to buy, as needed. (This is a useful service, since many large steel mills want a 'minimum buy order' of 5 or more tons or they will not even talk to you. Woe is it for the small companiy that makes springs - that would never use that much steel! So, they buy just a little from people like Lapham-Hickey.) Lapham is still in business in Chicago, though no one there knows anything about when they gave out the razor blades!! From the box, however, I can tell that they were from sometime in the 1940 - 1960 period. The company deals mainly in spring steel. So, the name was saved for several years by using it on Trade Mark 'token shipments', and then was finally brought out of mothballs for the introduction of the Techmatic Band razor in the mid-1960s. G141 Gillette de 'Blade History'. In my current book on razor blades, you can read in more detail about the critical times starting about 1930, when Gillette and AutoStrop were going toe to toe in a power play of epic proportions. During the years of the early 1930s, there were many changes to the styles of blades in order to accomodate Probak-style blades and also to throw off the competition! Recently discovered was a small quantity of unused bulk blades from this time period. I am offering these to you at a low cost so you can see first-hand the evolution of the blades during this critical period of the early 1930s. This Value assortment is for historical enjoyment. You get five early 1930s Gillette blades tracing the evolution of the style changes. All are unused. Three are unwrapped and two are wrapped in wax paper. You get: NEW 'A' blade; 'C' transitional style; 'D' final style with indents on either side of end holes; 'D' date coded Gillette blade stamped, "Importe des Etats Unis D'Amerique"; and a 'D' date code Probak, all for $1.25.

The blade shape (no center slot but enlarged outer holes to fit many variations of double edged razors) was patented by Soderman Larl Arne of Partatera OY, patent 19493 filed at Helsinki Finland in 1938. It is believed that the last blade offered was designed for 1952 Helsinki Olympics (which were held) but that this one was designed for 1940 Olympics - this is only theory, not substantiated by facts. This company also produced firearms. Single de unused blade $10.
